A former SCNF machine shop transformed into a community workplace
Perhaps you’ve heard of the Passage à niveau (à la Ferme du Rail), a restaurant in the 19th arrondissement near the old Petite Ceinture? Well, here’s La Maison Faitout!
A few months ago, the Passage à niveau team and the Aurore association breathed new life into an abandoned SNCF premises on the edge of the tracks, this time in the 20th arrondissement! Once occupied by a squat, the building, which resembles a two-storey townhouse, is now home to a hybrid project! Maison Faitout is a human-scale third-location project committed to sustainable, socially-responsible food production, and also houses a charming café-restaurant and a clerks’ school!
Maison Faitout, like a townhouse with a garden
The building at 1 rue Florian still bears the scars of its previous life! On its facade, numerous tags recall its squatting past and its proximity to the Petite Ceinture, its original destination!

Today, this 350 m² space is the playground of Aurore and Passage à niveau, who have transformed it into a pleasant, supportive place to live, open to the neighborhood! You could spend long days here, as the place imposes its own tempo! A cosy café and bar on the first floor (where small plates are also served in the evening), a restaurant with homemade cooking and a preference for grilling on the 1st floor, and last but not least, a courtyard surrounded by greenery. With its 200m² delimited by low walls, this space, sheltered from the street, not to say almost hidden, is most peaceful!
