One of the most beautiful and authentic Christmas markets in Europe, this city, 1h30 flight from Paris, is a highly magical destination. This little-known but impressive medieval city has been home to this not-to-be-missed event for 300 years!
A colorful medieval Christmas market
When the Advent season kicks off in northern Germany, Lübeck takes on a whole new look. The city, famous for its red-brick facades and medieval heritage, prepares for a Christmas like few other cities can. From the end of November, the cobbled streets and squares of the historic center are lit up. The impressive Holstentor, the towers of the Town Hall and the spires of St. Mary’s Church set the scene for a Christmas market that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
The main market, set up in front of the town hall, features dozens of wooden chalets. Artisanal stands showcase a wealth of regional know-how: blown glassware, wooden toys, handmade Christmas decorations, sculpted candles, textile creations and small works of art. There’s a surprise in store at every turn.
Lübeck has a number of parallel markets that add to the magic of the visit. A historic market in front of St. Mary’s offers a more medieval atmosphere, with merchants in costume and objects of ancient inspiration. Further afield, a craftsmen’s market takes place in the inner courtyards of the Heiligen-Geist-Hospital, one of the city’s most beautiful buildings. There are also a number of more confidential markets, perfect for unearthing unique pieces or more authentic Christmas gifts.
Of course, gastronomy and gourmet delights play an essential role in this delightful event. Visitors often warm up with a glass of hot Glühwein or a thick hot chocolate. Grilled sausages, decorated gingerbread and traditional cakes fill the stalls. It’s also hard to miss the marzipan, a real local pride. Here, marzipan comes in all shapes and sizes, and you’ll almost always leave with a little bag in your pocket. Between gourmet stops, many cafés and brasseries open their doors to welcome chilled strollers.
Beyond the festive aspect, the most charming thing about Lübeck is the scenery. The city, already very photogenic the rest of the year, takes on an almost cinematic dimension during the Christmas season. The red bricks turn orange under the garlands, the narrow streets become fairy-tale passages and the historic squares resemble scenes from Nordic fairy tales. In the evening, the lights are reflected in the windows, choirs can be heard in front of the churches and the scent of cinnamon follows visitors from one market to the next.
The 2025 edition of the Lübeck Christmas Market promises once again to be a sure bet for those who dream of an authentic Christmas.
