Since 1628, this historic and magnificent Christmas market has been lighting up the whole city throughout the month of December. Known and recognized the world over, it’s a must-see destination for anyone who wants to enjoy the magic of the festive season.
When December comes, the central square of Hauptmarkt in Nuremberg is transformed: around 180 wooden chalets with red and white striped roofs take their place in the cold air, a veritable little Christmas village nestled in the heart of the Altstadt. This year’s event runs from November 28 to December 24.
This famous market is one of the most beautiful in Europe
The market, known as Christkindlesmarkt, goes back a long way: it was first officially mentioned in 1628, but is probably even older. Every year, towards the end of November (on the Friday before the first Sunday in Advent), the festival kicks off with an opening ceremony: the girl elected “Christkind”, dressed in white and gold, delivers a festive prologue from the gallery of the Frauenkirche.
Strolling between the rows of market chalets, you can feel the unique atmosphere of the place. Enjoy the tinkling bells, the garlands winding between the medieval facades, the aroma of lebkuchen (Nuremberg gingerbread), the glühwein (mulled wine) steaming in the cups, and even the toasted bratwurst sold in a bun. The decor is festive, and the emphasis is on local crafts.
Symbols of the market’s renown are the 180 or so enchanting chalets filled with treasures. Each stand boasts the typical red-and-white striped fabric, making it akin to the expression “the little town of wood and cloth” often attributed to Christkindlesmarkt. These stalls sell handcrafted Christmas decorations, wooden toys, beeswax candles, figurines, the famous gingerbread, and a myriad of other objects typical of the region.
The market isn’t just a place to shop, it’s a veritable backdrop to the magic of the festive season. Families, couples or groups of friends will find an opportunity to walk under the twinkling lights, taste local specialties and take home authentic souvenirs from their trip across the Rhine.
If the Nuremberg market is an institution, it’s also a true highlight of Advent in Europe. With its wooden chalets, red-and-white striped roofs, regional flavors and historic setting, it epitomizes what you’d expect from an end-of-year getaway: enchantment, authenticity and memories. In short, the perfect getaway to celebrate Christmas and the festive season.
