But what is this strange installation we’ve been seeing on the chic Place Vendôme since yesterday? At first glance, it might appear to be a deflated balloon that landed on the cobblestones by chance. Well, this enormous mass of helium is a work of art! Designed by American artist Alex Da Corte for the Art Basel Paris festival, it represents Kermit, the famous frog from the Muppets, created by Jim Henson. A stunning free installation to be viewed all week long.
A giant balloon on Place Vendôme – a work of art that doesn’t go unnoticed
Every year, the Art Basel festival delights lovers of contemporary art. Over the course of a week, you’ll discover astonishing works of art, some of them highly immersive and photogenic. While most of the exhibition will be on view at the Grand Palais , you can also see unusual installations all over Paris, thanks to its “hors des murs” program. Place Vendôme, for example, is regularly a favorite playground for contemporary artists. Whether to shock, challenge, question or make you laugh , these ephemeral installations never leave you indifferent.

Right now, until October 26, you can’t miss artist Alex Da Corte’s latest playful creation: Kermit the frog, in XXL and half-inflated. And it’s anything but a coincidence, since this work is a real nod to contemporary American history. Every year in New York, a magnificent balloon procession takes place in Manhattan to celebrate Thanksgiving. But in 1991, Kermit’s balloon was punctured by a tree during the parade, then deflated as it went along , leaving the hero with a most comical face. Every American knows this scene! With his gigantic, humorous work, Alex Da Corte wanted to question the image of pop icons in our society, and their impact.
A very funny work, to be admired free of charge until October 26!
