In Barbizon, there are countless charming spots and reasons to visit. Since the 19th century, this village nestled on the edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau has attracted painters, writers, and nature lovers. But among the top attractions, La Folie Barbizon holds a special place. Located on the village’s Grande Rue, this former country house converted into a hotel deliberately blurs the lines between lodging, an artists’ residence, and a cultural venue.
A creative haven in the heart of a charming village
Here, no two rooms are alike. The 21 rooms and suites were designed in collaboration with artists, designers, architects, and artisans. Wall murals, custom-made furniture, ceramics, stained-glass windows, and vintage finds create worlds that are completely different from one room to the next.

The project is led by Lionel Bensemoun, who has already established several cultural and hospitality venues. His idea was to reconnect with the artistic spirit that made Barbizon famous. For long before the Impressionists, the village had become a veritable open-air laboratory for the painters of the Barbizon School, drawn to the landscapes of the Forest of Fontainebleau.
Jean-François Millet, Théodore Rousseau, and Camille Corot stayed and worked here for decades. This artistic legacy is evident throughout the property. Artists are regularly welcomed in residence and play a direct role in the hotel’s evolution. Some of the works on display were even created on site. The result: La Folie Barbizon is constantly evolving and never quite looks the same as it did just a few months ago.

But the hotel isn’t just for art lovers. Its location alone is reason enough to make the trip. A short walk takes you to the first trails of the Fontainebleau Forest. Hiking, biking, or simply strolling through the woods are all part of the experience.
Throughout the year, the venue also hosts exhibitions, intimate concerts, creative workshops, gatherings, and even botanical walks. A program designed as a natural extension of the spirit of the place.
Just an hour from Paris, La Folie Barbizon ultimately continues the village’s history. Just as painters once came here to seek inspiration from nature, today’s visitors come to find a creative retreat. One more reason to visit this charming village in Seine-et-Marne.
