When the warm weather returns, the Forest of Fontainebleau quickly becomes one of the top getaways for residents of the Île-de-France region. And among the many trails in the forest, the Gorges de Franchard trail is one of the most pleasant for an easy outing without venturing far from Paris. About 50 kilometers from the capital, this short 2.5-kilometer loop takes you through some of Fontainebleau’s most iconic landscapes, featuring rocky outcrops, sand, pine trees, and towering oaks.
Probably the most exotic hike in Île-de-France
The trail begins near the former hermitage of Franchard, which has stood in the middle of the forest since the Middle Ages. Monks once lived there in seclusion from the world, long before the site became a popular place for walks. Even today, the place retains a rather peaceful atmosphere, especially on weekdays or early in the morning.

As you follow the trail, rocks appear among the trees, the terrain becomes more rugged, and certain sections almost give the impression of walking through a landscape other than that of the Île-de-France region. Fontainebleau possesses this rather rare quality: it manages to offer a complete change of scenery while remaining less than an hour from Paris.
Among the highlights of the route are the Roche qui pleure (Weeping Rock), known for the water droplets that trickle down its face after rain, and the Œil des Nations(Eye of the Nations), a monument erected in the forest as a tribute to nature conservation.
The trail alternates between shaded sections, more open clearings, and viewpoints overlooking the rocky terrain. In the spring, the vegetation quickly comes back to life, and the light filters through the pine trees in a rather spectacular way at the end of the day.

In terms of accessibility, the hike is not particularly difficult and is suitable for most hikers, including families. Taking your time, the loop takes about 1.5 hours to complete.
Easily accessible from Paris by car or via Fontainebleau followed by a short drive, this hike remains a sure bet whenever the urge to get out into nature strikes. A simple, refreshing route that’s varied enough to make you feel like you’ve left the Île-de-France region for an afternoon
