We’re off to Auvergne and Polignac for today’s walk. With its thousand-year-old history and postcard-perfect scenery, this is a not-to-be-missed stopover in the heart of France.
This Haute-Loire village is perched on an ancient volcano.
The heart of the village is organized around quiet lanes and volcanic stone houses, typical of the Haute-Loire region. Between small gardens, ancient low walls and unobstructed views of the surrounding plateaux, you can enjoy a pleasant stroll through the town. Polignac has retained a very local atmosphere, away from the crowds, while offering a remarkable heritage to discover at your own pace.
It’s impossible to talk about Polignac without mentioning its fortress. Built in the Middle Ages, it dominates the village from the top of its volcanic rock. For centuries, this major defensive site was the stronghold of the powerful de Polignac family, one of the most influential in the kingdom. As you climb the path to the summit, you gradually come to see the remains of the ramparts, fortified gates and towers that bear witness to the sheer scale of the site.
The view from the top is breathtaking. The panorama opens out over the whole region, with the volcanic relief and the town of Le Puy-en-Velay as a backdrop. This view explains why the site was long considered impregnable. Today, the fortress is open to visitors and offers an impressive natural setting.
But beyond the fortress, the village also boasts a Romanesque church, ancient crosses and many traces of its religious and agricultural past. The surrounding area is ideal for walking, with paths winding through meadows, plateaus and frozen lava flows.
