18th-century dinner shows at Versailles
If the time machine hasn’t yet been invented, the best way to experience an evening in the age of kings is with ReminiSens. In the heart of the royal city, it’s possible to experience immersive costumed evenings, during which everything has been imagined to recreate the hushed atmosphere of the Grand Siècle. As soon as we arrive, we’re greeted by costumed actors. Powdered wigs, court dresses, velvet, candles and humorous dialogue transport us back to the time of Louis XIV. And while we’re served a menu inspired by period recipes, an intrigue unfolds at our table, played out all around us.

First of all, to set the scene, the space has been designed as a period salon. Wood panelling, draped curtains, subdued lighting and Baroque music in the background: everything has been done to immerse us in the grand era of Versailles. As far as culinary delights are concerned, French gastronomy of the 17th and 18th centuries is celebrated. A range of 3 or 5-course formulas and period-style menus make up the diner. “Return from hunting”, “return from fishing” or “from the kitchen garden”: there’s something for every taste.

But perhaps the most interesting aspect of ReminiSens is the experience of spectacle and table theater that takes place each evening. Between each course, there are scenes to spice up the evening. The actors, trained in history and improvisation, embody colorful characters from the royal court. We’re not only spectators, but also actors, as we follow a number of intriguing plot twists and turns.
