Paris, with its monuments, its banks of the Seine, its charming little streets… but also its far less romantic stories. This Saturday, October 10, the “Legends of Cursed Paris” night tour offers one final date. For over two hours, forget the City of Light. The Bloody Barber, the mysterious Devil’s Gate at Notre-Dame, and the former Cemetery of the Innocents will reveal a little-known side of the capital.
When the City of Love Shows Its Dark Side
The tour begins at dusk. Naturally, the atmosphere is already different. For 2 hours and 10 minutes, Guillaume, the guide from Sous les Pavés, leads visitors through the streets of central Paris. Along the way, he recounts the strangest legends and anecdotes that have unfolded on the streets of the capital.
This isn’t just a string of anecdotes, dates, and monuments. Instead, the tour focuses on the stories we often overlook as we pass by these places. Some reveal historical facts. Others stem from terrifying legends passed down over several centuries. This blend of fiction and reality gives the tour a mysterious and intriguing edge.
One small detail—which isn’t actually all that small—adds an even more playful twist: the address isn’t revealed to the public until after the reservation is made.
A Bloody Barber, the Devil’s Doors, and a Vanished Cemetery
Among the stories told during the evening, some are sure to change the way we perceive certain places we think we know very well.
The tour focuses primarily on the legend of the Devil’s Doors at Notre-Dame. According to legend, a young blacksmith made a pact with the Devil at this very spot to complete an impossible task within the given time frame. Another, far more macabre story is that of the Bloody Barber of Rue des Marmousets. Legend accuses him of murdering customers with the help of his neighbor, a pastry chef. Finally, the evening ends at the Cemetery of the Innocents, which was located in the Les Halles district. Unlike the previous stories, this cemetery actually existed. Over the centuries, it became so overcrowded that Paris eventually moved some of the remains to what is now the Catacombs.
The idea behind the evening isn’t to visit a “haunted” Paris in the literal sense. It’s more about discovering, behind the places we know and pass by every day, the dark stories, beliefs, and legends that have been part of the city’s history for centuries.
