In the south of Île-de-France, some villages hold unexpected surprises. Built between the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century, the church of Saint-Sulpice de Favières is one of the finest examples of Rayonnant Gothic architecture in the Île-de-France region. From the outside, the slender volumes, flying buttresses, and large windows testify to an architectural ambition that is almost unusual for a town of this size. In the Middle Ages, Saint-Sulpice-de-Favières was an important pilgrimage center, thanks to the relics of Saint Sulpice, which attracted many worshippers. The church was therefore designed to accommodate a crowd much larger than the local population.
Inside, the very high and wide-open nave lets in plenty of light through the large Gothic windows. The slender pillars, vaults, and overall proportions are reminiscent of the architecture of large urban churches, reinforcing the contrast with the surrounding rural setting. The choir, which is particularly well developed, is one of the most remarkable features of the building.
Around the monument, the village of Saint-Sulpice-de-Favières is also worth a visit, and was selected for the TV show Le Village Préféré des Français (France’s Favorite Village) in 2022. A few streets lined with old houses, a preserved rural environment, and a calm pace of life make up the setting. The church dominates the landscape and serves as a real landmark in this village of less than 400 inhabitants.
