Just a short train ride from the capital, this unusual Christmas market is one of the most unusual events of the European winter season. Set in a station concourse, this festive gathering of over 100 stalls and a giant Christmas tree will enchant visitors for an entire month!
A covered Christmas market in the heart of a railway station
In the heart of Zurich’s main railway station, one of Europe’s largest indoor Christmas markets transforms the main concourse into a magical setting every year. Under the monumental glass roof, travelers discover a veritable winter village right next to the tracks. The atmosphere is unique: just step through the doors of the Hauptbahnhof and you’ll find yourself immersed in a glittering decor, dominated by the famous and majestic Christmas tree, fully decorated and over 15 metres high.

With over a hundred chalets neatly lined up, the market follows a gourmet and artisanal itinerary that appeals to locals and visitors alike. Here, the emphasis is on comfort food: melting raclette, toasted bratwurst, gingerbread, crunchy pralines, salted pretzels, Swiss chocolates in all shapes and sizes, there’s something for everyone. As for beverages, the inevitable mulled wine rubs shoulders with fruit punches, creamy hot chocolates and other winter specialties that are the perfect accompaniment to a stroll through the decorations.
The Zurich Christmas Market is also a showcase for handicrafts. Handmade jewelry, scented candles, carved wooden objects, woollen scarves, local creations and more traditional souvenirs fill the stalls. Between two purchases, you can stop to listen to musicians or admire a culinary demonstration.

Zurich is also home to several other Christmas markets that are well worth a visit. The Niederdorf market in the Old Town plunges visitors into a particularly enchanting medieval atmosphere. The Sechseläutenplatz market, set up in front of the Opera House, captivates with its elegance and designer chalets. Last but not least, the lakeside Wienachtsdorf offers a magical backdrop, with its illuminations reflected in the water. Together, they form a veritable winter wonderland that lends Zurich an incomparable festive charm throughout the season.
Whether you arrive by train or travel through the city especially for the occasion, the Christmas market at the main station offers a bright and comforting interlude, perfect for a getaway from the hustle and bustle of the capital.
