Alsace may be home to some of the most majestic Christmas markets in the world, but there’s much more to Eastern France than just this region. The Moselle region is home to one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in France! Voted the country’s second most beautiful Christmas market in 2024, the one in Metz has just reopened its doors on November 21. It’s only an hour and a half by train from the capital!
The Metz Christmas market: an enchanted interlude in the heart of Moselle
As winter approaches, Metz lights up to reveal one of the most beautiful winter atmospheres in eastern France. Every year, the city transforms its historic squares into a fairytale route, punctuated by majestic decorations and gourmet chalets. The Metz Christmas Market attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors, enchanted by its charm and friendly atmosphere.
What’s more, the market extends over several emblematic squares, creating a truly immersive promenade. Place Saint-Louis, with its medieval arches, traditionally hosts wooden chalets in an intimate atmosphere. A stone’s throw away, the Place d’Armes is adorned with a huge glittering fir tree and a Ferris wheel overlooking Saint-Étienne Cathedral. The larger Place de la République features a luminous display and family-friendly activities.

One of the major assets of the Metz Christmas Market is its varied entertainment. Ice rink, merry-go-rounds, light shows, children’s workshops, projections on the cathedral… Every year, the city puts together a dense program to suit everyone. The Ferris wheel can be seen from afar, offering a spectacular view over the rooftops of Metz and the luminous scents scattered throughout the city.
Crafts take center stage in the chalets. Glassmakers, jewelry designers, sculptors, woodworkers, ceramists… The market showcases Lorraine’s and Europe’s expertise, with a careful selection of exhibitors. You’ll find handmade Christmas decorations, original gifts and unique pieces that make all the difference when it comes to preparing for the holidays.
As with all major Christmas markets, Metz has a special place for gastronomy. Here, Lorraine specialities rub shoulders with seasonal classics. In the aisles, you’ll find home-made gingerbread, crispy waffles, crêpes, freshly baked pretzels and the inevitable hot chestnuts. Savoury eaters will appreciate the tartes flambées, röstis, regional cheese boards and the famous quiche lorraine.
Throughout the city, glittering alleys, luminous arches and the play of shadows and colors add to the magic. The cathedral is sometimes adorned with artistic illuminations that attract the curious as well as photography enthusiasts. Last but not least, the Sentier des Lanternes, a trail of 2,500 lights, is located in the heart of Square Boufflers.
So, with its markets, delicacies and illuminations, Metz is a Christmas destination not to be missed! You can hop on the train and make a stopover at the superb Villette Christmas market.
