One of Europe’s oldest Christmas markets reopens its doors
As winter approaches, the center of Stuttgart is transformed. The lights begin to shine around the Old Castle, Schillerplatz slowly comes to life and Marktplatz is decked out in tinsel. The city’s Christmas market, considered one of the oldest in the country, returns for a 2025 edition at the end of November. Visitors will be able to stroll all the way to Christmas in a decor that combines heritage, crafts and delicacies.
The market’s history goes back several centuries. Records of winter fairs in Stuttgart date back to the late 17th century, giving it a special place among Germany’s markets. The decor of the historic squares, the facades of the old castle and the decorated roofs of the chalets create a warm, authentic atmosphere.
As soon as you step into the market, the aisles reveal stalls filled with handcrafted Christmas decorations, traditional toys, carved candles, glass creations and delicacies typical of the region. In this respect, the Stuttgart market never disappoints. It’s easy to follow the scents wafting through the air, a mixture of cinnamon, roasted almonds and mulled wine. Creamy Spätzle are a must, reminiscent of the heart of Swabian cuisine, while Maultaschen, the local ravioli, are as warming as steaming goblets of mulled wine. Decorated gingerbread, caramelized almonds, grilled sausages and traditional cakes complete the gourmet stroll.
Depending on the time of day, the market changes pace. In the late afternoon, families flock to the merry-go-rounds set up near Schlossplatz. In the evening, choirs and brass ensembles take their place in the courtyard of the Old Castle or on Schillerplatz. As night falls, the facades are reflected in the shop windows, and the whole city center takes on a postcard allure.
The 2025 edition of the Stuttgart Christmas Market is already in full swing, and the magic will continue until the end of December. An event that combines heritage, gourmet delights and conviviality. For an authentic winter holiday or a few hours’ getaway, Stuttgart is the perfect destination!
