This weekend at the end of November marks the reopening of one of Europe’s most iconic Christmas markets. With roots dating back as far as the 14th century, it’s one of the oldest and most traditional of its kind. Accessible by train or 1h30 flight, it’s a magical winter getaway!
One of Europe’s finest Christmas markets returns in 2025
Every winter, Munich is transformed into an immense postcard setting, but the real heart of the magic is at Marienplatz, where the Christkindlmarkt is held. The Christkindlmarkt, one of Germany’s oldest Christmas markets, returns in 2025 with an even warmer atmosphere, a multitude of artisanal chalets and a packed program. This year, the date starts on November 24.
Beneath the Gothic facades of the New Town Hall, the large fir tree decorated with thousands of lights welcomes visitors and sets the tone. At its feet, dozens of wooden chalets mingle with the scents of cinnamon, ginger, toasted almonds and steaming mulled wine. This year, around 140 stalls are advertised, each offering Bavarian specialities, handmade decorations and genuine artisan treasures.
Reinforcing the authenticity of the market, glass blowers, wood carvers and craftsmen specializing in straw or pewter decorations continue to keep alive skills handed down for generations. As you stroll between the chalets, you’ll often come across craftspeople in the midst of demonstrations, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere.
One of the most popular moments comes each evening when the balcony of the Hôtel de Ville comes alive with a live concert. Whether you’re a family, a couple or just a curious visitor, it’s a not-to-be-missed opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere to the full.
For those who want to broaden their horizons, Munich has many other markets throughout the city. The most exotic is undoubtedly the Märchenbazar, set in a colorful Bohemian circus-style décor, with creative stalls, small stages for concerts and a more alternative atmosphere. Not far away, the Pink Christmas Market in the Glockenbachviertel district attracts a merry crowd every year with its festive entertainment. As for the Mittelaltermarkt, in the heart of Wittelsbacherplatz, it plunges visitors into a medieval atmosphere, where hot hypocras are drunk instead of traditional mulled wine.
Munich in December offers a rare blend of a large historic market and a lively modern city. The Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz remains the focal point of this winter experience, a place where you can still find the same simple pleasure of strolling around, drinking a spiced mulled wine and admiring the lights that dress the city’s facades.
A great European getaway, but if you want to experience the magic of Christmas without leaving the capital, this Swiss market at La Villette is also a great alternative.
