Easily accessible by train or plane from Paris, this European city is ringing in the return of its incredible Christmas market. At the foot of an imposing cathedral, 150 red-roofed stalls will be set up, promising a month dedicated to local crafts and gastronomy.
This magnificent Christmas market promises an enchanted getaway for the festive season.
In Cologne, the approach of winter heralds the return of a much-anticipated event. The illuminated facades, the scent of cinnamon… and above all, the large square animated by the red chalets of Roncalliplatz: every year, the Christmas market set up at the foot of the Gothic cathedral transforms the city center into a glittering setting, and the 2025 edition will be no exception. This year’s event runs from November 17 to December 23, with extended weekend days to make the most of the festivities.

The main market attracts visitors for its monumental setting. The UNESCO-listed Kölner Dom dominates the entire square. Its two immense spires frame a gigantic Christmas tree and a hundred or so wooden chalets offering local crafts, carved objects, traditional toys and seasonal decorations. You’ll also come across all the must-haves of German gastronomy, from spiced mulled wine and decorated gingerbread to delicious, gourmet grilled specialties.
Just a few streets away from the Cathedral Market, other places extend the magic. The Altstadt is home to Heinzels Wintermärchen, a larger market where stalls cover medieval alleyways. Neumarkt, with its white and silver decorations, offers a gentle ambience carried by the Angel Markets. Along the Rhine, a more contemporary-style harbor market attracts visitors with its modern stalls and panoramic views over the quays. These different atmospheres come together to form a winter walk that you can follow as you stroll along.

To make the most of the market, it’s best to visit on weekdays or in the mornings before the crowds arrive. Cologne is best explored on foot, and public transport makes it easy to get to Roncalliplatz, whose subway exit leads directly to the cathedral. Some travellers even choose to combine their visit with a visit to one of the nearby museums or a stroll along the Rhine to prolong the experience.
When night falls, the market seems to transform itself. The atmosphere is typical of the great cities of Eastern Europe: a mix of tradition, conviviality, tempting smells and little discoveries in every corner. The 2025 edition of the Cologne Christmas Market promises once again to immerse you in the magic of the festive season, and we look forward to seeing you there!
Another alternative without leaving Paris: the Marché de Noël de la Villette (Place de la Fontaine aux Lions) for a guaranteed Alpine atmosphere, complete with skating rink and Zurich fondue chalet!
