With its Christmas market voted the most beautiful in Europe according to a study, this European capital has established itself as a top destination for the festive season. A flamboyant city at all times of the year, it is particularly transformed for the winter season, when it offers a host of magical activities for the whole family to enjoy.
As December approaches, the whole of Europe and its capital cities are decked out in their finest finery. Illuminated, gourmet and festive, Budapest has established itself for several years as a destination of choice for experiencing the magic of Christmas. But this year, it has won a prestigious title: according to a study conducted by European travel specialist Tollwayr, the Vörösmarty Square Christmas Market has been named Europe’s Best Christmas Market 2025, ahead of those in Strasbourg and Vienna.
This European capital is home to one of the world’s most beautiful Christmas markets.
The study was based on several criteria: length of opening, average price of accommodation, popularity on social networks and volume of Google searches. With a score of 7.41/10, Budapest came out on top, thanks to its attractive blend of authenticity and modernity. The market spans 52 days and boasts unbeatable value for money, with the average three-star hotel rate at €131 per night. It also boasts over 14,200 Instagram posts and almost a thousand on TikTok, proof of its growing appeal to travelers from all over the world.
Located on the legendary Vörösmarty square, the market immediately immerses visitors in a fairytale setting. Decorated wooden chalets, the smell of mulled wine and traditional music create a warm atmosphere that blends perfectly with the elegant facades of the city center. Along the aisles, you’ll discover a selection of Hungarian artisans, handmade objects, jewelry and colorful ceramics, not to mention local sweets.
It’s impossible to leave without tasting the typical specialties: kürtőskalács (the famous wood-fired caramelized cake), goulash served in crusty bread, or lángos, the deep-fried patty covered in cream and cheese. Visitors can also enjoy a central stage featuring concerts and folklore shows, in a friendly, family-friendly atmosphere.
Beyond the market itself, the magic of Christmas spreads throughout Budapest. Streetcars are adorned with lights, small markets are organized and a giant ice rink is set up in City Park, at the foot of Vajdahunyad Castle. At night, the view of the illuminated Danube and the Hungarian Parliament adds to the romantic atmosphere that makes the city an ideal party destination.
While Vörösmarty Square remains the undisputed star, Budapest is home to several other Christmas markets that are well worth a visit. The market at St. Stephen’s Basilica is renowned for its spectacular light projections on the church façade and its high-end handicrafts. The more family-friendly City Park market combines local crafts and children’s activities, while the Óbuda district is home to a more traditional market, popular with locals.
With its blend of authenticity, accessibility and enchantment, the Vörösmarty Square Christmas Market is a must-see experience. Voted number 1 in Europe, this Hungarian stopover blends gastronomy, craftsmanship and a magical atmosphere without ever falling into the glitz. A winter destination that’s warm, affordable and full of charm.
Without leaving Paris, you can already get inspired and stroll between the various stalls and gourmet chalets (and even try out the ice rink) at the Marché de Noël de la Villette (Place de la Fontaine aux Lions)!
