The Lion Dance, a Chinese tradition dating back more than 1,000 years
But what exactly is the Lion Dance? In this spectacular traditional Chinese dance, two dancers slip into a lion costume, one at the front and one at the back of the outfit adorned with feathers, pearls, and gold leaf. To the beat of drums, cymbals, and gongs, these red and yellow lions perform a choreographed routine of energetic jumps, falls, and rolls. In fact, in pure Chinese tradition, it is said that the Lion Dance symbolizes good luck and prosperity and that the hubbub of the dance wards off bad luck and protects against evil spirits. A Chinese tradition dating back more than 1,000 years, which Shangri La has been celebrating with great pomp and circumstance in February for many years.
