Less than an hour from Paris, the Chevreuse Valley remains one of the most pleasant spots to unwind for a day without traveling very far.
In the heart of this natural park, you can easily go from an old village to a forest trail, then to a meadow or a castle hidden behind the trees. The Upper Chevreuse Valley stretches across much of the Yvelines and Essonne departments and offers a wealth of walks accessible by train or car.
A vast green oasis at the gates of the capital
Many start their getaway near Chevreuse, a small town crossed by the Yvette River and dominated by the Château de la Madeleine. From the heights, the view of the entire valley is well worth the climb. On the way back down, the narrow streets of the town center, the small bridges, and the old houses give the village a rather peaceful atmosphere, especially on weekdays.

But the valley is more than just one place. Further on, villages like Dampierre-en-Yvelines, Choisel, and Cernay-la-Ville draw visitors with their narrow roads, forests, and light-colored stone houses. Some areas even give the impression of being much farther from Paris.
Hiking enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy here. The valley boasts dozens of trails, with varying levels of difficulty. Some loops wind through the woods for several kilometers, while others follow the edges of ponds or pass by old mills.
The area is also popular for its more low-key spots: tea rooms, inns, small terraces, and local producers in the villages. Many people simply come for lunch and then go for a walk for a few hours before heading back to Paris at the end of the day.

Another advantage of the Chevreuse Valley is its accessibility. On the RER B line, you can reach Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse in less than an hour from central Paris, with several hiking trails starting directly from the station.
With its forests, villages, and paths winding through the hills, the Chevreuse Valley remains one of the best escapes from the hustle and bustle of Paris. A simple, green getaway that’s vast enough to return to without ever taking the exact same walk twice.
