Just 40 minutes from Paris, Chevreuse checks all the boxes for a refreshing getaway. A genuine village, greenery everywhere, a river running through the center, a castle perched on the hills, and walking trails all around.
A bucolic village less than an hour from the capital
As one of the most charming spots in the department, Chevreuse is often nicknamed the “Little Venice of the Yvelines,” and the name is well-deserved. The Yvette River winds through the village, forming small branches, canals, and several footbridges. The famous Promenade des Petits Ponts remains one of the most popular spots in the area. This path runs along the water, winds through gardens and past historic homes, and gives the town a charm that is quite rare in the Paris region.

It’s also impossible to miss the silhouette of the Château de la Madeleine, visible from the village center. This medieval fortress, whose earliest structures date back to the 11th century, overlooks the entire valley. Once at the top, the view of Chevreuse, the forests, and the surrounding hills is well worth the climb. The site is free to visit and also houses the Maison du Parc naturel régional de la Haute Vallée de Chevreuse.
In the heart of the village, you can stroll through the narrow streets, passing by Saint-Martin Church, old stone houses, a few beautiful bourgeois mansions, and more secluded spots where the water reappears between two gardens.
Chevreuse is also an excellent base for those who love to hike. The area is crisscrossed by several well-known trails, including the Chemin Jean Racine, which is very popular with hikers. It connects the valley to Port-Royal-des-Champs via woods and rolling paths. More broadly, the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse Regional Nature Park is full of accessible loops for half a day or longer.

In terms of practicality, access is easy via the RER B to Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse, the line’s terminus, followed by a few minutes by bus, bike, or on foot, depending on your preference. Spring remains one of the best seasons to discover Chevreuse. The riverbanks bloom, the trees turn green, and the terraces begin to fill up again.
Chevreuse is one of those places that’s easy to recommend. It offers heritage, nature, lovely walks, and a genuine village atmosphere. A simple, accessible getaway that never fails to deliver when you’re in the mood for some fresh air.
