Just south of Troyes, a short train ride from the capital, lies one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in France. Built between the 16th and 17th centuries, the Château de Tanlay captivates visitors with its elegance, harmonious proportions and verdant setting in the heart of the Tonnerrois Regional Nature Park. A visit not to be missed, and costing just 3 euros!
This incredible Renaissance château was built on water
Rich in history, the Château de Tanlay, still little-known to the general public, offers a fascinating immersion in history, architectural beauty and castle life, all in an unspoilt natural setting. Under the aegis of Admiral de Coligny and then Michel Particelli, the château took on its historic importance in the mid-17th century, and was adorned with the beautiful features we know today.
Château de Tanlay is surrounded by a moat, giving it the appearance of a spectacular fortress. Its perfectly symmetrical facade stretches for almost 80 meters and is composed of two wings, with a central courtyard of honor. Light-colored stone, slate roofs and large mullioned windows characterize its classical Renaissance style. The interior is equally impressive. The gallery, painted in the 17th century, is a trompe-l’œil masterpiece with allegorical frescoes depicting mythological and historical scenes. Each room reveals a richly painted décor, testifying to the taste for arts and culture of successive owners. The château is also surrounded by beautiful gardens, carefully designed with geometric parterres.
Less well known than its neighbors on the Loire or in Versailles, the Château de Tanlay seduces visitors with its authenticity and tranquility. It offers a complete experience of Renaissance architecture, exceptional frescoes and peaceful gardens, all without the crowds. A perfect getaway for lovers of history and beautiful landscapes, easily accessible from Paris.
