For a getaway that offers a truly different setting, head to the south of France and the village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, about 3.5 hours from Paris. Nestled in the heart of the Hérault Gorges, this small medieval village attracts visitors as much for its heritage as for its spectacular surroundings. With its limestone cliffs, river, cobblestone streets, and thousand-year-old abbey, the setting almost feels like it’s cut off from the rest of the world.
A spectacular medieval village
Located about 40 minutes from Montpellier, Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is best known for its Gellone Abbey, founded in the 9th century. It is around this abbey that the village has developed over the centuries. Today, the abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela.

In the historic center, some streets are very narrow, while others open onto small squares that are bustling with activity on sunny days. You’ll pass by medieval houses, workshops, a few artisanal shops, and passageways covered in greenery.
All around, cliffs almost completely encircle Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, and several trails allow you to gain some elevation. Even without going on a long hike, a few minutes are enough to enjoy beautiful views of the rooftops and surrounding valleys.

Another major advantage of the area is its proximity to the Hérault Gorges. In summer, many visitors alternate between exploring the village and taking a break by the water. The Pont du Diable, located a few kilometers away, remains one of the most popular spots for swimming or canoeing.
Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is one of those places where you don’t necessarily need to plan a lot of activities. People come mainly to walk, take in the scenery, enjoy a leisurely lunch on a terrace, and soak up the atmosphere. A simple getaway, but one that’s particularly delightful once the warm weather returns.
