It takes just a few minutes here to understand why Brantôme appears so often on lists of the most beautiful spots in the Dordogne. Here, the river flows everywhere. It runs alongside the houses, winds around the historic center, slips under the bridges, and gives the village a look that’s quite unusual for the Périgord. Just a few hours from Paris, this is a top getaway idea for sunny days.
Brantôme is often nicknamed the “Venice of the Périgord,” but the comparison only tells part of the story. The town’s true charm lies above all in its ancient alleyways, its monumental abbey, and its wisteria-covered facades. Here, you can enjoy a very relaxed, almost summery atmosphere, even in the off-season.

The best way to explore the town is still to wander aimlessly. The center is small, everything is within walking distance, and every turn reveals something new: a hidden terrace, a path along the Dronne River, or a viewpoint overlooking the limestone cliffs that tower over the village.
You also can’t miss Saint-Pierre Abbey. Built against the rock face, it gives Brantôme a very distinctive silhouette. Behind the religious buildings, cave dwellings have been carved directly into the cliff. Some are still open to visitors today and serve as a reminder that the site was inhabited long before the Middle Ages.

Around the village, the Périgord is beloved for its tranquil landscapes of forests, winding roads, and local markets. Many visitors initially stop by for a quick break but end up spending the entire day there. It must be said that Brantôme works perfectly at this pace: lunch on a terrace, a stroll along the water’s edge, a visit to the abbey, and then ice cream or a drink in the late afternoon overlooking the river.
Just a few hours from Paris, Brantôme achieves what many tourist destinations strive for but don’t always succeed in: remaining a pleasant place to live while still being spectacular.
