A cultural highlight of the fall season, “Cézanne and Us,” the Grand Palais’s new exhibition, will open on September 23, 2026. The exhibition will feature nearly 180 works, including about 70 by Paul Cézanne, juxtaposed with those of major figures such as Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondrian, Joan Mitchell, Bridget Riley, and Peter Doig. Rather than a traditional retrospective, the exhibition explores how each artist appropriated, expanded upon, or—at times—challenged his legacy.
From Cézanne to Picasso and Matisse: More Than a Century of Influences
In the late 1880s, Cézanne exhibited rarely, and yet artists began to discover his paintings at the art supply store of Julien Tanguy— known as “Father Tanguy”—in Paris. His approach to constructing landscapes and forms through color quickly intrigued painters seeking to break away from academic conventions.
His recognition then grew rapidly thanks to exhibitions organized by the art dealer Ambroise Vollard and, after his death in 1906, with the major retrospective at the 1907 Salon d’Automne. Cézanne thus became a reference point for the avant-garde movements of the 20th century. Picasso and Matisse were among those who studied his work closely, while the exhibition traces this lineage all the way to contemporary artists such as Peter Doig.

Among the paintings featured are *Montagne Sainte-Victoire with the Large Pine*, on loan from the Courtauld Institute in London, and *The Large Bathers* from the National Gallery. The exhibition itinerary will thus allow visitors to directly compare certain works by Cézanne with the responses they inspired several decades later.
