It’s impossible to think of Reims without immediately thinking of its cathedral. Set in the heart of the city, this incredible structure is one of those monuments you recognize at first glance. Monumental, richly sculpted and steeped in history, it is one of the absolute masterpieces of French Gothic architecture, and a powerful symbol of royal power.
One of France’s major cathedrals, 40 minutes by train from Paris
Construction of the monument began in the early 13th century, after a fire destroyed the previous building. The construction site quickly took on exceptional proportions. The aim was clear: to build a cathedral worthy of Reims’ role as the coronation city of the kings of France. For nearly eight centuries, from Clovis to Charles X, sovereigns were crowned here, making this place a pillar of French history.
More than two thousand statues adorn the cathedral’s façade, including the famous Smiling Angel, which has become one of the symbols of Reims. The portals depict biblical scenes with an impressive sense of detail. Inside, the nave reveals spectacular proportions. The height of the vaults, the regularity of the pillars and the light filtering through the stained glass create an incredible atmosphere. Much of the medieval stained glass has survived the centuries, complemented in the 20th century by contemporary creations, notably those by Marc Chagall, for a touch of modernity.
But Reims Cathedral has had its share of setbacks over the years. Severely damaged during the First World War, it became an international symbol of the destruction of heritage. Extensive restoration campaigns in the 20th century restored the cathedral to its former glory and preserved its identity.
Today, the cathedral remains at the heart of life in Reims. Religious services, concerts and major ceremonies take place here all year round. Its location, just a stone’s throw from the shopping streets and champagne cellars, makes it a must-see for anyone discovering the city. Easily accessible from Paris, Notre-Dame de Reims Cathedral is a unique combination of architecture, history and heritage.
