To the west of Brussels, the massive silhouette of the Basilique Nationale du Sacré-Cœur in Koekelberg becomes apparent as soon as you step up to the sky. With its imposing green dome and geometric lines, the building is as intriguing as it is impressive. The fifth largest church in the world, it is quite simply the largest religious edifice built according to Art Deco principles.

Its construction dates back to the early 20th century, when an ambitious project was hatched: to erect a monumental sanctuary in homage to the Sacred Heart. The first stone was laid in 1905 in the presence of King Leopold II, but the rest was a bit chaotic. Two world wars and financial constraints postponed the work, with the result that the basilica was not actually completed until 1970. Its architecture retains the traces of these decades: a fascinating blend of tradition, modernity and boldness typical of Belgian Art Deco.
As you approach the entrance, you lose yourself in the curves of the dome, the red bricks, the large windows and the astonishing volumes of the building. Inside, immense naves bathed in light. The atmosphere is deliberately uncluttered, almost contemporary, and the acoustics are particularly appreciated during the concerts and cultural events that punctuate the year.
One experience not to be missed: the view from the panoramic platform. At over 50 meters high, the dome offers one of the most remarkable panoramas of Brussels. You can admire the historic center, the city’s rooftops, Elisabeth Park just below and, on a clear day, the distant horizons stretching out towards Flanders.
Around the monument, the Koekelberg district also offers a green interlude. The Elisabeth Park, a long ribbon of trees leading up to the basilica, invites you to extend your visit. With families out for a stroll, joggers and passers-by drawn by the calm of the area, this is an authentic Brussels atmosphere, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city center.
Even today, the Koekelberg Basilica impresses and attracts curious visitors and regulars alike. Whether you visit for its architecture, its breathtaking views or its history, it’s definitely worth the detour!
