Nestled in a cobbled Montmartre alleyway, the Lapin Agile is one of the hilltop’s most emblematic venues. As if frozen in time since 1860, this little orange shack with green shutters blends discreetly into the landscape. And yet, behind its confidential façade lies one of the capital’s liveliest spots, which has seen some of the most illustrious figures in Parisian cultural life pass through its doors.
One of Paris’s oldest cabarets in the heart of Montmartre
The Lapin Agile is one of the legendary places that have kept the legend of Montmartre alive for decades. From the Belle-Époque to the present day, it has enlivened Parisian nights and continues the town’s festive and poetic tradition. Today, regulars mingle with tourists in a joyous mix to enjoy cabaret evenings in this now emblematic venue.
After the great upheavals of 1860 and the integration of the village of Montmartre into Paris, some of the neighborhood’s old houses were destroyed by property developers. Threatened, the Lapin Agile survived thanks to the impetus of Aristide Bruant and Frédé, an emblematic Montmartre figure. In its golden age, the cabaret welcomed writers, painters, musicians, actors, sculptors and more. From Picasso to Apollinaire to Modigliani, all the crème de la crème of the artistic world gathered on the hilltop to share their respective passions.
Just across from the Montmartre vineyards, on the corner of rue des Saules and rue Saint-Vincent, you can still find this extraordinary place. An enchanting and atypical setting, right down to the interior, where tables, a piano and old-fashioned memorabilia decorate the interior. Four nights a week, poems and songs are sung at Le Lapin Agile, which still retains its reputation as a hotbed of talent. These evenings are all about drinking, listening and singing. Le Lapin Agile is one of those rare Parisian venues that has kept its soul. You don’t have to be a music lover or nostalgic to enjoy the experience.
