Nestled in the heart of the Montparnasse district, La Coupole is much more than just a restaurant: it’s a veritable monument to the capital’s cultural and artistic life. For almost 100 years, this Art Deco institution has kept the heart of the district beating with its extraordinary ambience and gastronomic reputation.
This Parisian restaurant has been a legend since the Roaring Twenties.
Opened with great fanfare on a December evening in 1927, La Coupole earned its reputation from the very first night. Having set aside 1,500 bottles for the evening’s guests, staff were soon overwhelmed by the influx of customers and demand, until stocks ran out that evening. Thus began the legend of La Coupole, and the success was immediate.
Listed as a historic monument since 1988, La Coupole boasts a flamboyant Art Deco style, with pillars adorned with frescoes by 27 artists of the period, colorful mosaics and geometric lines typical of the 1920s. You don’t come here just to dine, but also to immerse yourself in an untouched atmosphere, where every detail evokes the artistic bustle of the Montparnasse of yesteryear.
Over the years, La Coupole has seen a constellation of famous figures pass through its doors. Josephine Baker, Picasso, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir and Ernest Hemingway have all made this brasserie their meeting place. Even today, the address attracts Parisian and foreign clientele alike, curious to experience a piece of history as they push open its doors.
In terms of cuisine, the establishment remains true to its spirit as a great Parisian brasserie. Timeless classics such as the signature lamb curry, generous seafood platters and traditional foie gras are all on the menu. But the menu also reinvents itself, offering contemporary variations without ever betraying the soul of the house.
With its majestic dining room seating up to 500 guests, La Coupole is always the scene of lively meals. Its sunny terrace, overlooking the Boulevard du Montparnasse, also offers the ideal setting to enjoy the Parisian pace while savoring a coffee or glass of wine.
More than a restaurant, La Coupole is an experience in itself. Whether you come for lunch, dinner or simply to admire its unique decor, one thing’s for sure: a visit to this institution never leaves you indifferent! And for party-goers, every month La Coupole organizes its Paris Follies evenings, during which, on a given theme, guests come together in costume! Themes include the Roaring Twenties, 70’s Glamour and Hollywood & Decadence!
