From this Monday, October 1, the 70 km/h speed limit on the Paris ring road is over! As announced by Anne Hidalgo last November, the speed limit will be lowered by 20 km/h on the ring road. But since this measure can’t be implemented overnight, we’ve summarized everything that’s been planned to bring it into effect.
50 km/h limit on the ring road: when, where and how?
On Friday, Paris City Hall gave an update on the new speed limit on the Paris ring road, confirming a number of points. From October 1, the measure will initially apply between Porte des Lilas and Porte d’Orléans. This section will be the first to be subject to this legislation, and it will then take six nights to install the signs and apply the measure to the entire 35-kilometer ring road. The entire ring road will then be limited to 50 km/h from October 10.
In addition to these details, Paris City Hall has also issued a statement on speeding fines. During this “transitional” period, there will be no question of issuing fines, until the new speed cameras and signage have been installed.
The first reduction in speed on the Paris ring road dates back to 2014, when the limit was lowered from 80 to 70 km/h. Ten years on, this latest reduction is part of a wider plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement. Anne Hidalgo, the city’s mayor, stressed the importance of these actions in meeting the environmental challenge and providing a more sustainable living environment for future generations.
