Behind the massive doors of the Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis Church lies a part of Parisian history. Starting December 4, 2026, the LUMINISCENCE experience will bring these walls to life with a new show combining monumental light projections, live music, and performances by an orchestra on December 11, 12, 18, 19, and 26, and January 2.
And to guide us through these centuries of passion and turmoil, a neighbor unlike any other comes back to life: Victor Hugo himself, voiced by André Dussollier.

Victor Hugo, the New Narrator of LUMINISCENCE

Giving Hugo the role of narrator is by no means a mere artifice. As early as 1832, the writer settled just a stone’s throw away, on Place des Vosges, and quickly grew accustomed to attending Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis, which became his neighborhood church. It was under these vaults that he married off his daughter Léopoldine in 1843, signed the church registers, and donated two shell-shaped holy water fonts that can still be seen today. The place made such an impression on him that he included it in *Les Misérables*, using it as the setting for the wedding of Cosette and Marius.
But the journey doesn’t stop at the author’s memories. The show brings four centuries of upheaval to life: from the fatal duel of Henry II in 1559 to the laying of the cornerstone by Louis XIII in 1627, all the way to the barricades of the Paris Commune. On one of the pillars, a rough mark bears witness to this memory etched into the stone: the revolutionary inscription from 1871, “French Republic or death.”
Four centuries of history projected beneath the vaults

To enhance this epic scene, the projections follow the reliefs, curves, and Baroque gilding of the monument. The lighting even pulls off a clever sleight of hand by bringing back to life Simon Vouet’s altarpiece, a gem of painting that has been lost for generations.
Beneath the vaulted ceilings, the acoustics come into their own thanks to a live choir. The program weaves original compositions with classical masterpieces—from Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor to Allegri’s Miserere, including Vivaldi’s Winter—while a soloist sets the tone by welcoming visitors right at the door.
