As you know, the Pompidou Center is currently closed for four years. But that didn’t stop it from receiving the honorary designation of historic monument in October! Yet when it opened in 1977, the museum clearly didn’t have only admirers… A sweet victory for this museum, whose architecture continues to divide opinion even today!
The Pompidou Center Designated a Historic Monument
It’s official: on October 23, the Centre Pompidou was unanimously designated a historic monument. Closed until 2030 for major renovations, this is a sweet victory and a crowning achievement for this museum! Opened less than 50 years ago, it now joins the “very exclusive club” of other listed institutions, such as Notre-Dame de Paris and the Sacré-Cœur.

From now on, the entire interior and exterior of the building is protected, as is the Piazza area and its floor (except for the Brancusi Pavilion)… To admire and explore it, you’ll have to be patient a little longer. It will take another four years to bring this museum—which has become a must-see for Parisians and tourists alike—fully up to code.
