Anyone who rides Line 13 every day knows it’s clearly one of the worst in Paris. Crowded with people, the line is regularly disrupted, much to the chagrin of its riders… But before long, Line 13 is set to undergo a major transformation by becoming automated! Here’s everything you need to know.
Line 13 to Become Automated Soon
Following Lines 1, 4, and 14, Line 13 will be the next automated line in Paris. While construction is expected to be completed around 2035, you’ll be able to follow its progress starting next year. In fact, automatic platform doors will be installed gradually starting in 2027.
But why automate a metro line? In practical terms, an automated line is more likely to run on time! Acceleration, braking, and stopping phases are calculated to significantly reduce delays. Trains can run all day with almost no interruptions.
In addition, automated lines can adapt to traffic conditions. For example, if ridership increases, a new train can be added more quickly to handle the crowd. Finally, in terms of safety, the platforms are doubly protected by platform doors in addition to the train doors.
In short, will this automation make Line 13 significantly more pleasant? We’ll find out in eight years.
