Shopping at discount prices just a stone’s throw from Montmartre is now possible at a rather XXL-sized store. Since September 24, Lidl has been welcoming residents of the 18th arrondissement to a new supermarket spanning over 1,400 m² on Rue de Clignancourt. This new location is sure to appeal to those who want to fill their shopping carts without leaving one of the capital’s liveliest neighborhoods.
Over 1,400 m² at the foot of Montmartre
Montmartre is more readily associated with cafés, small neighborhood shops, and streets filled with tourists than with massive supermarkets. Yet for the past few days, Lidl’s red, yellow, and blue colors have made their appearance at 17–25 Rue de Clignancourt.
The chain didn’t do things by halves. Located on the ground floor of a residential building, the new store spans over 1,400 m² of retail space. Everything is grouped together on a single level. Lidl has revamped the layout, with wider aisles and a layout that’s easier to navigate. This is a far cry from the small neighborhood supermarkets more commonly seen on the streets of Paris.
For neighborhood residents, the opening adds a new option for grocery shopping just a few minutes’ walk from Montmartre Hill. When it comes to shopping, Lidl continues its winning formula: plenty of private-label products and lower prices than at other chains.

A massive supermarket designed to blend into the neighborhood
Upon arrival, the layout comes as a bit of a surprise. Over 1,400 m² at the foot of Montmartre isn’t exactly the kind of space you’d expect to find in Montmartre. Inside, the atmosphere stands in stark contrast to other Parisian supermarkets where every square centimeter counts. It’s easy to move around; the aisles are wider, and the store feels much more open. You’ll find the usual Lidl products, but in a more spacious and pleasant setting for shopping.
Another detail you might not necessarily notice while filling your shopping cart: the entire store’s operations are designed to be discreet. Apartments are located right above it. Deliveries are made in the basement, andsoundproofing has been reinforced. The idea is simple: to prevent the street from turning into a permanent delivery zone.
The same logic applies inside. The lighting adjusts to natural light and the presence of customers, while several fixtures consume less energy. Nothing spectacular at first glance, but these small details are what allow the supermarket to operate every day right in the heart of Paris—without looking like a hypermarket out of place in the Parisian landscape.
Shopping available until Sunday morning
In terms of convenience, the store is open seven days a week. It welcomes customers Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and on Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. If you’re driving, there’s a 200-space public parking lot in the building. That way, you won’t have to spend hours circling the streets of Montmartre looking for a spot.
With this new opening, Lidl is continuing its expansion within Paris proper. The chain has about twenty supermarkets in the capital, and this new location is clearly one of the largest.
So between a stroll up the hill and filling up your shopping cart, we finally know where to spot the Lidl colors.
