Haruki Murakami’s novels possess a rare power: the ability to blur the line between reality and imagination. This fall in Paris, one of his most fascinating worlds takes center stage at the Théâtre du Châtelet with *La Fin des temps*, a spectacular production directed and choreographed by Philippe Decouflé. A visual and poetic experience that proves once again that theater in the capital is breaking new ground.
A journey between two worlds inspired by Haruki Murakami
Adapted from the novel *La Fin des temps* (*Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World*), the production takes us into two parallel worlds that echo one another. On one side, Tokyo in 1985, where a man tries to find a lost love. On the other, an enigmatic city, suspended between dream, memory, and consciousness. True to Murakami’s universe, the story blurs the lines and invites us on an exploration that is as intimate as it is fantastical.
Directed by Philippe Decouflé
To bring this rich and multifaceted work to life, Philippe Decouflé has assembled a Japanese artistic team. The adaptation is by Ako Takahashi, the original music is composed by Umitaro Abe, while the set design, videos, lighting, and costumes all contribute to creating a world where every image seems to emerge from a dream. The main character is even split into three figures —“I,” “me,” and “my shadow”—in order to convey the novel’s full richness on stage.
Leading the cast is Tatsuya Fujiwara, one of Japan’s most famous actors, known in particular for his roles in film and theater. His presence further enhances the exceptional nature of this production, which was conceived in Tokyo before coming to Paris.
An immersive experience blending theater, dance, and music
For two and a half hours, including intermission, dance, theater, music, and visual arts blend together in a contemporary epic where the fantastical engages with emotion. The show will be performed in Japanese, with French and English subtitles, allowing audiences to be carried away by the musicality of the language while following this extraordinary story.
If you love dreamlike worlds, stunning visual productions, or are simply looking for an original night at the theater, treat yourself to an evening at *La Fin des temps* followed by a drink on a terrace—you’ll thank us later.
