You may not have known it, but the Eiffel Tower pays tribute to science! In fact, on the first floor, if you have good eyesight, you can read the names of 72 French scientists, all of whom are… men. These names are engraved in gold letters all around the first floor. But this year, things are going to change, as 72 names of female scientists will be added! Let us explain.
The Eiffel Tower pays tribute to 72 women scientists
They had been forgotten, but soon that will be a thing of the past . This year, 72 names of female scientists will be engraved on the Eiffel Tower. These are strong figures in the scientific field who, through their work, inventions, research, and boldness, have greatly helped the world of science to advance. This project, which dates back to March 2025, was initiated by the City of Paris, the “Femmes et Sciences” association, and, of course, the Eiffel Tower Operating Company (SETE).Every scientific field is represented: medicine, chemistry, physics, computer science, and more.

A tribute and a powerful symbol, allowing these historical figures, who have been overlooked for far too long, to finally take their rightful place. This new frieze will be placed just above the existing frieze, on the first floor of the tower. Although the list has not yet been finalized, we can easily imagine Marie Curie, Sophie Germain, and Agnès Ullmann (to name but a few) inscribed forever on the Iron Lady. Check back in a few weeks for the final list of names.
