Less than two hours from Paris, there’s a village where chalk cliffs, spectacular panoramas and medieval remains meet. A postcard setting that blends history, nature and authenticity, perfect for a timeless getaway. So hop on the train and discover this charming little commune!
This jewel perched on the banks of the Seine is an ideal getaway from Paris.
Just 1h30 from Paris by train, Les Andélys, in the Eure region, offers one of the most beautiful postcard views in Normandy. Set on the banks of the Seine and dominated by chalk cliffs, this picturesque little town is dominated by the impressive silhouette of Château Gaillard, a fortress built by Richard the Lionheart in the 12th century.

The first thing that strikes you on arriving at Les Andélys is the beauty of the natural setting. Here, the Seine draws a wide loop, surrounded by the white hillsides typical of the valley. From the heights of the château, the panorama is breathtaking: a mix of cliffs, greenery and the silvery ribbon of the river. No wonder this vantage point has inspired painters and writers down the centuries.
Perched on a limestone spur some 90 m above Les Andélys, Château de Gaillard was built in a hurry between 1196 and 1198. Designed to lock down the Seine valley, its complex layout and innovative defences – scalloped walls, machicolations and circular towers – made it virtually impregnable. Now in ruins, its remains still dominate the valley and bear striking witness to the audacity of medieval architecture.

Les Andelys is not just about the castle: the town also hides some real treasures. The 12th-century church of Saint-Sauveur and the collegiate church of Notre-Dame-des-Andélys, with its flamboyant 16th-century stained-glass windows, bear witness to its eventful history. A stroll through the narrow streets reveals half-timbered houses, flower-filled gardens and a peaceful atmosphere in stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of Paris. Beyond the monuments, Les Andelys is also an ideal starting point for walks in the fresh air. Hiking trails lead right up to the cliffs, offering spectacular views over the Seine valley.
The perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of Paris!
