As you know, Paris is full of hidden gems, and the Théâtre Daunou is clearly one of them. This Art Deco gem has a rather rare feature: its entire interior is blue. Ajewel of the 1920s, it has been closed for six years due to renovations and, we hope, will reopen soon.
A unique blue theater in Paris
Founded in 1921,the Théâtre Daunou stands out for its style. Behind its charming Art Deco façade lies a completely unique interior. Here, the classic red of the theater has been replaced by a deep blue, and the entirely gilded decor was designed by Jeanne Lanvin. The fashion designer added her own touch by creating a unique color and infusing a part of herself into the animal-inspired decor, where beautiful daisies painted with gold leaf adorn the theater.
While the color red serves to highlight the stage and the actors, blue was once used to draw attention to the audience! That’s right—until the 19th century, it was considered good form to be noticed before each performance.
Devoured by flames in 1970, this building—listed as a historic monument —had been suffering from the ravages of time for many years… Closed since 2020, the Daunou Theater was scheduled to reopen in 2024, then in 2025… but the renovations are taking longer than expected, and for now, no official date has been announced.
