There’s no denying it: France truly has the most memorable castles. From the Palace of Versailles, home of the Sun King, to the Palace of Fontainebleau with its impressive scale, and all the castles of the Loire Valley, there’s truly plenty to discover! In fact, it is here in the Loire Valley, about three hours from Paris, that a stone giant lies hidden. With its seven dizzying stories and a silhouette unique in the world, the Château de Brissac is the tallest in France. A colossus with a turbulent history, it will surprise you…
Brissac Castle: France’s tallest castle, located 3 hours from Paris
Of all the castles in France, this is indeed the tallest! Standing 48 meters tall, the Château de Brissac is a medieval structure that defies convention in many ways. It proudly overlooks the surrounding vineyards and offers breathtaking views of the entire 70-hectare estate. Comprising 204 rooms, the château was designed as a luxurious residence where every detail matters.

You’ll find magnificent state rooms with gold-leaf ceilings, stunning period furniture, and even a private opera house that can seat 200 spectators… Nothing was too grand for the Duke of Brissac, who wanted to transform his medieval castle into a luxurious palace. He undertook titanic renovation work, of which only the two imposing towers flanking the main entrance remain. This is why the castle’s architectural style is almost impossible to classify.
A castle reputed to be one of the most haunted in France…
While you can visit this magnificent castle year-round, it’s worth noting that it’s as famous for its exceptional size as it is for its legends. In fact, for over five centuries , the ghost of Charlotte de France—known as the Green Lady—is said to have haunted these halls…
And of course, it’s at night that this poor soul would wander the castle’s immense, icy corridors… In any case, that won’t stop us from exploring it!
