A futuristic train for the new Paris-Lyon-Marseille line? Maybe not futuristic, but there are some notable changes in design and functionality for SNCF’s TGV M high-speed train. This high-speed train will enter service in 2026, just a few short months from now. And ever since the first images were unveiled, comments have been flying thick and fast. Well, if you can call it that…
In terms of modernity and practicality, SNCF has revised its plans for 2026.
What if train travel were more pleasant from 2026 onwards? A few days ago, the SNCF lifted the veil on the all-new design of its high-speed trains. New-generation TGVs, which passengers will soon be able to enjoy. But what exactly is changing? First innovation: 20% more trains than the current SNCF trains. Another notable change is a completely redesigned interior for this TGV 2.0. For example, the train’s seats have been made from 90% recyclable materials, as the SNCF likes to say. More eco-responsible, but that’s not all.
Practicality and comfort have also been reviewed inside the second-class trains. The changes? The installation of individual sockets, a holder for telephones, a mini-tablet, a pocket-emptying feature and (drum roll) 5 cm more space for passengers’ knees. A last point that passengers who previously felt a little cramped will not complain about. In 1st class, passengers will benefit from a 5 cm wider seat and a wider recline.
More comfort on Paris-Lyon-Marseille trains? It’s well on the way!
These new-generation trains are also designed to be better adapted to people with reduced mobility. “For the first time, a high-speed train is integrating the needs of people with disabilities right from the design stage,” says SNCF. A good thing, then, and we’d like to say, it’s about time.
Another change in the bar car. At the heart of the TGV M, passengers will discover the Bistro car, which will now occupy 2 floors. A space divided in two, for two distinct functions and services. While the first floor of the TGV is dedicated to dining and drinking, with 28 seats, the first floor features refrigerators and a self-service grocery store. In addition to completely redesigned toilets, the TGV M boasts 3 brand-new spaces, providing space for a total of 8 bicycles. Yes, the SNCF is on the road to change.
TGV M: new features divide Internet users
And ever since SNCF unveiled the new design of its TGV M, comments have been rife on social networks. Yes, the Métro and the SNCF seem to be the Internet users’ favorite subjects. But what’s wrong with the TGV M? “Why fabric? Great for hygiene!”, “Washable seats would be great!” While some point the finger at the choice of seat materials, others rail against the prices. “Instead of spending money on design, offer us cheaper trains”, some complain. Only one innovation seems to find favor in their eyes: the design of a bicycle space. However, many passengers agree on one point: these new-generation trains still have no space for families!
