The Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye: a hidden gem worthy of Versailles
Located less than an hour from Paris, this stunning former royal residence will almost make you forget Versailles. Conceived by King Francis I as a true Renaissance palace, it served as a playground for part of the Sun King’s childhood…

Abandoned due to lack of maintenance toward the end of the 18th century, this extraordinary castle has had several lives: a makeshift prison, a veterans’ garrison, a cavalry school… It wasn’t until Napoleon III that the castle regained its former splendor.

It is now home to Europe’s largest archaeological museum, as well as a superb French-style outdoor garden designed by Le Nôtre. King Louis XIV’s gardener created magnificent 2-kilometer-long terraced gardens there , offering breathtaking views of Paris and the forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
