Just 2 hours from the capital, an unmissable getaway awaits all history buffs and lovers of beautiful panoramas. This itinerary, winding its way around the meandering Loire, also takes in some of the region’s finest châteaux, renowned the world over. From the majestic Château de Chambord to the medieval fortress of Angers, via the verdant gardens of Villandry, this is an incredible historical tour you’ll want to take without delay.
France’s most beautiful châteaux on one tour
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Loire Valley is a veritable open-air museum. As you explore it from east to west, you’ll follow in the footsteps of the kings and queens who have shaped French history. The itinerary often begins around Orléans and unfolds along the river to Angers, with stops in the emblematic towns of Blois, Amboise, Tours and Saumur.
Among the highlights, the Château de Chambord always impresses, with its double-revolution staircase and monumental symmetrical architecture. Chenonceau, nicknamed the “Château des Dames”, captivates with its elegant silhouette across the Cher River. Amboise and its royal chateau offer breathtaking views over the Loire, and recall the presence of Leonardo da Vinci in the region.
Further along the road, Villandry and its formal gardens are among the most spectacular in Europe. Azay-le-Rideau, meanwhile, seems to float on water and embodies the perfect harmony of the Renaissance. Cheverny, still inhabited by the same family for over six centuries, inspired Hergé to create the Château de Moulinsart in Tintin.
Continuing westwards, the road leads to Saumur, famous for its castle perched above the Loire and its cavalry school. The last stop is Angers, with its immense fortified castle and 17 massive towers. Here you can admire the famous Apocalypse Tapestry, the largest medieval tapestry in the world and a veritable treasure trove of French heritage.
Along the way, you can also treat yourself to some local specialties. Between two visits, you can stop off at a vineyard for a glass of Vouvray or Chinon, enjoy a rillette in Tours, a fouée (a small bread with a filling) in the Saumur region, or a pike-perch in beurre blanc near Angers. To finish on a sweet note, Quernons d’Ardoise, small nougatine bites coated in blue chocolate, are perfect.
Spring and autumn are particularly suitable for this road trip: the gardens are in bloom or the forests are decked out in flamboyant hues. In summer, the region is alive with festivals, night markets and chateau shows. For cycling enthusiasts, the Loire à Vélo offers a gentle route along the river.
From Paris, you can easily reach Orléans, Blois or Tours by train. A car is still the best way to visit several châteaux in a single day, as far as Angers. To make the most of your stay, you can take advantage of discounted passes to several monuments. Allow at least three days to fully enjoy the whole itinerary.
