In western Paris, there’s an address where time seems to have stood still. Behind a mosaic-covered façade, you’ll discover an Art Deco world that has been preserved for almost a century, blending elegance, history and gastronomy. Welcome to Prunier, a veritable institution and seafood paradise in Paris for over a century.
Prunier: the Art Deco jewel on Avenue Victor Hugo
Just a stone’s throw from the Arc de Triomphe, the Prunier restaurant is one of the most emblematic addresses in Paris. Behind this masterpiece is the eponymous family, perpetuating the tradition of a house founded in 1872. Over the decades, the Prunier restaurant has welcomed writers, artists and politicians. From Coco Chanel to Hemingway, not forgetting the great figures of Paris, they’ve all been here. Today, after a century of existence, the restaurant is both a culinary mecca and an architectural masterpiece. Its listed Art Deco decor, which has remained virtually intact, makes it a veritable time machine for anyone who pushes open the door on avenue Victor Hugo.
From the outside, the facade covered in colorful earthenware catches the eye. Inside, everything exudes the 1920s: mosaics, stained-glass windows and marine frescoes immerse diners in a pleasant, authentic atmosphere. The main dining room, a listed historic monument, is a true tribute to Art Deco, with its stylized ocean-inspired motifs and colors that evoke the ocean floor.
If Prunier has become an institution, it’s also thanks to its specialty: caviar. As early as the 1920s, Prunier developed sturgeon farming and helped popularize this refined delicacy in France. Even today, the company offers a prestigious selection, accompanied by seafood and fresh fish. Enthusiasts come to sample oysters, lobsters and langoustines, as well as emblematic recipes such as house-smoked salmon.
After several months of renovations over the summer, Prunier will reopen its doors in September, giving you the chance to try out this legendary restaurant if you haven’t already!
