On November 20, the Musée Cognacq-Jay was robbed “with great violence” during public opening hours. Resulting in an estimated loss of 1 million euros, this unfortunate event also led to the hasty closure of the institution. Today, a few weeks after the robbery, the Rue Elzévir establishment can finally reopen its doors to the public.
The Musée Cognacq-Jay reopens to visitors
“A big, warm and sincere thank you to everyone who showed us their support during this period of closure.” These are the few words that accompanied the post announcing the reopening of the Musée Cognacq-Jay on Facebook. As a reminder, a few weeks ago, four men armed with baseball bats and axes broke into the museum, getting their hands on small precious objects as part of the “Luxe de poche” exhibition.
Not since 2010 and the “heist of the century” at the Musée d’Art Moderne have Parisian cultural venues seen such a theft. The situation forced the museum to close its doors as a matter of urgency. Three weeks later, the Musée Cognacq-Jay has reopened its doors and invites Parisians to (re)discover its permanent collections.
