Just under 2 hours by plane from the French capital, this little-known region has all the attributes that make it the ideal getaway for epicureans in search of peace and quiet. Far from the hustle and bustle of Paris, Slovenia’s Lake Bled region has been named Europe’s most relaxing destination in 2025. All the more reason to get away from it all this summer.
This fairytale lake is surely Europe’s most relaxing destination
Usually, when lakes meet mountains, the result is simply sumptuous scenery. Lake Bled and the surrounding region in Slovenia are a perfect example of this. Just 35 minutes from Ljubljana, which itself is a 2-hour flight from Paris, this place is straight out of a fairy tale. The perfect example is certainly this church built in the middle of the lake on an island, with the mountains as a backdrop. Right in the heart of the Julian Alps, this region has everything to please, starting with the fact that every season is a good time to visit.
One of the region’s must-sees is the island of Bled, Slovenia’s only natural island, which can be reached by typical Slav boats. Overlooking the island, a 17th-century church and a café are just some of the things to do on the island. But to really appreciate the scenery, it’s best to take a walk around the lake. A 6-kilometre trail has been laid out for you to walk or cycle around the lake. Along the way, you’ll be able to enjoy some truly exceptional views, particularly from Mala Osojnica. Another local must-see is the superb Bled Castle, perched on a cliff more than 130 metres above the water, which houses a wine cellar, printing works and gallery.
But the lake is not the only wonder of the area. Just a few kilometers away is the Triglav National Park, known for its superb panoramas, hiking trails and alpine lakes such as Bohinj. North of Bled, you can also appreciate the natural beauty of the Vintgar Gorge, another nearby landmark.
In short, for a romantic setting, nature as far as the eye can see and, above all, a change of scenery and relaxation, head for Lake Bled!
