After nearly two weeks of sunshine spent having lunch on a terrace or along the Canal Saint-Martin, Parisians will finally have to dig out their sweaters and rain boots. Heavy downpours are set to hit the capital for nearly two weeks, every single day… An autumnal atmosphere in the middle of May that won’t please everyone.
Two weeks of rain in Paris
While Mother Nature has been suffering from a severe water shortage since April—which turned out to be one of the driest months in the country— May is expected to replenish our groundwater reserves… much to the chagrin of Parisians.
Indeed, as you’ve no doubt noticed, since Sunday, May 3, rain and thunderstorms have made a major comeback, putting all our plans for getaways and drinks on the terrace in jeopardy…
According to the Meteo-Paris website, the coming week is shaping up to be particularly unsettled, with further deterioration expected this long weekend of May 8. The culprit? Warm winds from Tunisia and cool air from the Atlantic. A combination that doesn’t mix well and is leading to sometimes intense showers and even thunderstorms all over France.

Unfortunately, while a brief improvement is expected on Tuesday, May 12, the rain is set to return with a vengeance the very next day… According to meteorologists, Parisians will experience a sharp drop in temperatures, falling 4 to 5 degrees below seasonal norms. A worst-case scenario that will repeat itself all week and likely continue after the Ascension Day long weekend…
But as you know, the weather isn’t set in stone, and we might just be in for a pleasant surprise in the coming days (let’s stay positive…).
