Three years ago, this legendary bridge had been restored to its former glory! It had even been the setting for the Olympic opening ceremony, thanks to Aya Nakamura’s highly acclaimed (and iconic) performance… But for several months now, the Pont des Arts has been looking rather shabby. Indeed, it has deteriorated significantly over time, due to the constant foot traffic—and especially the bicycles—which have weakened the bridge. Worse still, parts of the deck are coming loose, forcing the city to install wooden planks to limit the damage…. A problem for thousands of pedestrians, jeopardizing their safety.
The Pont des Arts falling into ruin… barely three years after its renovation
The restoration of the sublime “Lovers’ Bridge” cost nearly 2 million euros and came with a thirty-year warranty… but clearly, that wasn’t enough. Indeed, just three years later, the legendary Pont des Arts will once again have to undergo a series of emergency repairs.

The reasons? The heat and the heavy foot and bicycle traffic (which is actually prohibited) have apparently worn down the fastenings of the planks, causing them to warp and fail under the strain. The result ? The planks are lifting in places, making it difficult for pedestrians to walk across and increasing the risk of falls. As a stopgap measure, wooden planks have been screwed down in some places to limit the damage and prevent accidents… But the bridge no longer meets safety standards, and it is time for the Paris City Hall to take action to save this piece of our heritage.
That is why , starting May 11, “emergency” renovation work will take place over four weeks to secure the loose rivets and reinforce this footbridge so beloved by Parisians…
