Would you like to add a little green to your home? Problem: your apartment isn’t very bright. Although we know that plants need sunlight to thrive, some of them can cope with dark corners without dying out. Of course, you’ll still need a minimum amount of light, but you don’t need a space bathed in sunlight for plants to thrive. Here are the top houseplants that don’t need light to live comfortably in your home. And I promise, they’re easy to care for!
Zamioculas
This ultra-hardy plant is often the star of our interiors. It’s quite simple: they’ll forgive you almost any mistake! Lack of watering, a room with little sun… nothing scares it! In fact, it prefers to be watered less rather than too frequently and generously. A great plant to start your collection with!
Calathea
Known for its graphic foliage, calathea is a real star of the apartment. Its biggest enemies? Excessive water and direct sun, which burn its leaves! It will therefore do best in a less brightly lit space. On the other hand, if it’s plunged into semi-darkness, the leaf pattern is likely to fade… For optimum care, spray the leaves regularly with a little water.
Sanseveria
This pretty plant with its yellow borders is a force of nature! Forget to water your plants? It’ll stay bright, and even prefer to forget (it’s a succulent, let’s not forget). From March to October, you can water it once a week without any problem, and less frequently throughout the winter. In terms of light, this plant adapts equally well to bright spaces and semi-shaded areas. However, it does not tolerate frost.
The photos
This elegant drooping plant with its heart-shaped leaves is much tougher than it looks. It’s one of the few plants that can thrive in artificial light. A small amount of light is all it needs, as is moderate watering.
Aglaonema
Resembles the calathea with its graphic leaves. Its variegated shades of pink, cream, green or silver, depending on the variety, are magnificent. Like the calathea, the aglaonema doesn’t like direct sunlight at all, which turns its leaves brown. It prefers a dimly lit spot, and will do best in a damp corner such as a bathroom or kitchen.
Ficus elastica
As beautiful as it is hardy, ficus elastica is an ideal plant for beginners. It’s simple: it doesn’t require much effort on your part. Watering once a week is all it takes to maintain its beauty. As for exposure: shade or part-shade is perfect.
Peperomia
This charming perennial plant doesn’t like direct light, if at all. If you think you’re doing it a favor by giving it a sunbath, you’ll simply burn it. Conversely, it prefers soft light and semi-shaded locations.
