Gustave Caillebotte was a talented Impressionist painter who left his mark on our time. We owe him some exceptional paintings, which today are exhibited mainly at the Musée d’Orsay. But what few people know is that the artist had a magnificent property hidden away in Yerres. A paradise on earth, surrounded by nature, with an 11-hectare park. Today, you can still visit and enjoy this enchanting setting, part of which is free all year round…
Maison Caillebotte: a romantic estate surrounded by greenery on the outskirts of Paris
This fantastic 19th-century residence belonged to the Impressionist’s family. He lived here as a child between 1860 and 1879, finding inspiration in the surrounding countryside and painting over 80 works. This magnificent estate boasts more than 10 hectares of absolutely sublime parkland, where you’ll find a Romanesque-Gothic chapel built for Gustave’s uncle, who was a priest. You’ll marvel at the flowerbeds, romantic sculptures and charming Swiss chalet. When the weather’s warm, we recommend a refreshing punt along the banks of the Yerres River. The park is free and open all year round.

After extensive restoration work lasting almost 20 years, this Palladian-style mansion has been restored to its former glory. Inside, you’ll discover furnishings identical to those found in the past, and a range of elegant, cosy rooms including the master suite, the artist’s studio and the billiard room. Surprisingly, some of the artist’s paintings (including sketches and unfinished canvases) were used to help restore the premises.

In the artist’s studio, located in the attic of the building, you can visit an exhibition room that regularly features original paintings by Caillebotte. An opportunity to discover or rediscover the undeniable talent of this multi-faceted artist.
Good to know: weather permitting, picnics are permitted in the second part of the park, just beyond the chapel. Pets are only allowed on a leash and must not be allowed on the lawn. A little-known but absolutely wonderful place, nestling on the banks of the Yerres , to discover all year round.
