Litter, dog faeces, garbage cans scattered on the ground… all comments that have hoisted the city to 5ᵉ place.
Paris: one of the dirtiest cities in the world?
According to the study, 28.2% of the opinions left by Internet users concerned the city’s dirtiness. Despite the efforts made by Paris City Hall since the Olympics, tourists don’t seem convinced. Highly-touristy districts such as Opéra and the legendary Rue de Rivoli are often cited as “dirty” and “run-down”.

In fourth place was Florence, which garnered 29.6% of opinions concerning its insalubrity and lack of upkeep. The main reason? Its narrow streets, which make cleaning more complex than in most other cities. In third place, Las Vegas, the only American city in the ranking, garnered 31% of negative opinions. Not surprising, according to the study, given its intense nightlife and massive influx of tourists. In second place, Rome, the eternal city, garnered over 35% negative reviews. The museum city is said to be teeming with “rats, maggots and garbage”… Last but not least, Budapest took the gold medal for the world’s dirtiest cities, with 37.9% negative opinions, 12% more than in 2024…
Our beloved Paris may not shine in terms of the cleanliness of its streets, but it can boast much cleaner air quality than 10 years ago, according to the latest European survey published in recent weeks.
