Just 2h30 from Paris by train, you’ll find one of France’s most unusual and spectacular sites, the Palais Idéal. Its creator, Ferdinand Cheval, was a simple rural letter carrier in the 19th century. Inspired by nature, postcards and his childhood dreams, he spent 33 years building, alone, a palace entirely sculpted from cement, pebbles and shells collected on his daily rounds. Today, it’s possible to visit it!
Facteur Cheval’s incredible Ideal Palace, 2h30 from Paris
Tucked away in the heart of the Drome region, a surrealist site as poetic as it is strange is one of the region’s must-sees, even if it’s not widely known. The Palais Idéal, a spectacular listed building, is the work of one man. Letter carrier Ferdinand Cheval built it with his own hands over a 33-year period.
Located in Hauterives, this building is neither a classical château, nor a religious monument, nor an ancient ruin, but perhaps all of these at once. With no training in architecture or masonry, Cheval collected stones on his daily rounds from 1879 onwards, and assembled them one by one. The result, some 30 years later, was an entirely hand-carved edifice over 12 meters high and 26 meters long, blending oriental, antique, Christian and Hindu inspirations.
The Palace is divided into several facades and galleries inspired by many cultures. Among the most striking architectural elements are the oriental gallery featuring a stone elephant, a miniature castle and a Hindu temple. The north façade features a series of twisted columns, animals and engraved messages. On the east facade, which the letter carrier called the “Temple of Nature”, we can discern several tributes to flora and fauna, as well as the now-famous inscription: “The work of one man.”
Much more than a tourist curiosity, the Palais Idéal is a true work of art and perhaps the only monument in the world built in such a self-taught, solitary fashion. What’s more, it’s also the setting for numerous events throughout the year, including superb candlelit concerts.
