On the third and final matchday of Group I, Les Bleus and Norway—both already qualified—will face off on Friday in Boston for first place—and the chance at a more favorable bracket for the rest of the tournament.

Everything is set for one of the most compelling matchups of this group stage. France and Norway have won their first two matches and have already qualified for the round of 32—this new “round of 32” introduced with the expansion to 48 teams. All that remains is to determine the group standings: first place in Group I will be decided on Friday, and the winner will inherit a theoretically easier path through the tournament.

Les Bleus are coming in on a roll. After a 3-1 win over Senegal—featuring a brace from Kylian Mbappé, who became the all-time leading scorer in French national team history—they followed that up with a decisive 3-0 victory over Iraq. Norway, back at the World Cup for the first time since 1998, scored more goals: a 4-1 victory over Iraq, followed by a 3-2 win against Senegal, but they also conceded three goals. France therefore leads on goal difference, and a draw would be enough for them to finish first thanks to their head-to-head record.

On the injury front, the Scandinavians have one concern: Julian Ryerson, who was substituted early against Senegal due to a thigh injury, is expected to be replaced by Marcus Pedersen. France, meanwhile, has a full squad, although Didier Deschamps has left the camp following the death of his mother, with his assistant Guy Stephan taking over on an interim basis on the bench.

Kickoff is set for Friday, June 26. In Foxborough, it will be at 3:00 p.m. (Eastern Time); for French viewers, tune in at 9:00 p.m. Paris time.

The stadium

The match will be held at Gillette Stadium—renamed “Boston Stadium” for the tournament—located in Foxborough, about 30 kilometers southwest of Boston. With a capacity of approximately 65,000, the home stadium of the New England Patriots (NFL) and the New England Revolution (MLS) is distinguished by its 22-story lighthouse featuring a 360-degree observation deck and the largest outdoor curved video screen at any sports venue.
